Same-s*x equality in superannuation is not achieved

02/06/2008

Greens Senator Kerry Nettle welcomed the government's same-sex superannuation legislation introduced to the parliament today but is disappointed that is does not deliver superannuation equality for all same-sex couples.

"The legislation removes discrimination for same sex couples in commonwealth super schemes but it does not remove the discrimination that same-sex couples face in commercial superannuation schemes," said Senator Nettle.

"The government is relying on commercial superannuation firms to make these decisions.

"This is not the removal of discrimination that the government promised the public.

"The Greens will look at moving amendments to ensure discrimination is removed for same-sex couples in commercial superannuation.

"The government has indicated that at least five more pieces of legislation will be required to remove all discrimination against same-sex couples.

"The Greens and many in the gay and lesbian community are now even more worried that not all discrimination will be removed. This seems to be a very drawn out process.

"The Greens are following the entire process very closely. The rights of children with same-sex parents are high on our agenda.

"The Greens continue to stress that equality it not something that comes in half measures and the government is still refusing to support same-sex marriage. Without the right to marry, same-sex couples do not have equality."
