Pell's population and greenhouse comments major disservice to Australians

16/07/2008

Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said Cardinal George Pell has done a major disservice to Australia with his call for an increase in the population of western democracies and his scepticism about human induced climate change.

"Cardinal Pell's comments on population and climate change put him at odds with the consensus science and the needs of the planet," Ms Rhiannon said.

"Australia is on the international stage this week with World Youth Day. Cardinal Pell has the ideal opportunity to provide leadership to Australians and young people around the world in reducing humanity's ecological footprint.

"The Cardinal's statement reveals he has little understanding of the enormous challenges facing the young people visiting Sydney.

"Compassion needs to be shown for current and future generations. Working together to rein in runaway climate change is the key.

"Cardinal Pell's message undermines comments made by Pope Benedict at his mid-air press conference while on route to Australia.

"In what has been widely interpreted as a call to embrace the biblical message of caring for the earth, the Pope asked Catholics 'to find a way of living, a style of life that eases the problems caused to the environment'," Ms Rhiannon said.
