Greens applaud Hunter Catholics for strong climate change stance
13/05/2008
Greens MP and Hunter spokesperson Lee Rhiannon has congratulated the Newcastle Catholic Social Justice Group for taking a strong public stance on climate change, following the announcement of the Hunter Catholics Climate Change seminar being held in Hamilton this week.
“I congratulate the organisers for addressing the most pressing environmental and social justice issue of our time,” said Ms Rhiannon.
“The speakers at this seminar will examine the challenges of global warming in a moral and ethical context, and will focus on large and small scale measures to tackle climate change.
“The seminar will consider how low lying Pacific nations will be affected by climate change and will also hear about the science of climate change technologies.
"As the Hunter region faces the expansion of the coal industry, the main contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in this country, local people must consider global warming as both a local and a global problem.
“Every level of Government needs to hear a strong community message that people expect real action on climate change.
“The Greens urge Hunter residents to attend the seminar and engage with climate change in their own community," said Ms Rhiannon.
