WIN ON POLITICAL DONATIONS BAN

Now that Premier Iemma and Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell have changed their position and are backing a ban on political donations I have called on them to ensure that a limit on election spending is brought in and the ban extends to third parties. http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23415745-421,00.html

MINING INDUSTRY

This week the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA’s) head climate scientist, Dr Hansen, wrote to the Prime Minister with a copy to Premier Iemma, stating that coal mining and exports and the construction of new coal-fired power plants should be halted. The NSW government was not listening as they chose this week to bring in new mining legislation. The Minister’s advisers boasted that it would cut red tape for the mining industry. My office is working closely with environment groups and coal affected communities on amendments to this legislation.

Last week I visited coal communities in the Gloucester region. On top of the greenhouse pollution, the destruction of waterways and flood plains caused by mining operations was the major concern they raised.

Gold mines are also causing major problems for locals. I have been working with Greens Councillor Jeremy Buckingham and local farmers to ensure the water needs of Orange residents, farmers and the local environment are put before those of the Cadia gold and copper mine. http://lee.greens.org.au/index.php/content/view/2467/50/

LABOR SCANDALS

Asked to comment on the anniversary of the 2007 state election I said that incompetency and deception has marked Premier Iemma's first year in office. If the Labor government wants something to celebrate they should stop running on Liberal Party policies.
http://news.smh.com.au/iemma-govt-hasnt-helped-nsw-opposition/20080324-218q.html

I called on Premier Morris Iemma to remove Mr Tripodi as a Minister. http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/03/26/2199505.htm

When I asked Roads Minister Eric Roozendaal to report on progress of two North Shore cycleways he dodged the issue by focusing on his new 27 speed bike and his lycra bike shorts.

POKIES TURN OFF

I joined forces with Victorian Greens MP Colleen Hartland and the Gambling Impact Society NSW to call on the managers of pubs and clubs to turn off the 97,000 gaming machines in NSW during Earth Hour. http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23450376-29277,00.html

MARINE PARKS AMENDMENT BILL 2007

The Marine Parks Amendment Bill 2007 will be debated in the Legislative Council next week. The Bill is a substantial review of the current zoning regime used to manage the State’s six marine parks. The Greens will be moving amendments that aim to enhance biodiversity in our marine park ecosystems and keep in check industrial activities like sand dredging, whilst ensuring the regime accommodates meaningful public consultation. Despite the barbarians (Sartor, Costa, Macdonald, Meagher, Tripodi – to mention a few) being well and truly inside the gates of this Parliament, we are dreaming of a new dawn of environmental management under stewardship of Minister Verity Firth.

TAMWORTH PILGRIMAGE FOR GM FOI DEVOTEES

If you’re interested in assessing whether conflict of interest issues affect GM food crop decision making, you’ll need to go to DPI’s Tamworth office, as this is the only way you can inspect the public register. In response to a parliamentary question on whether or not the Minister would table the expert committee’s disclosures book, the Minister replied: “I am not giving any undertakings regarding a question from you on this matter – none whatsoever”.

Here we have a Minister telling the Parliament that it doesn’t matter if expert committee recommendations are influenced by the pecuniary interests of its members. Even more concerning is the privity clause in the Gene Technology (GM Moratorium) Act. Section 7A(11) means that no court or tribunal in Australia can review the decision of the Minister’s approval of GMOs.  This means that the Minister’s approval is beyond reproach. This is in direct contradiction with the High Court’s approach to the constitutionality of privity clauses.

TIBETAN SELF-DETERMINATION

In a 2005 article, Ms Rebiya Kadeer, a Uyghur human rights defender boldly stated:

‘I am a terrorist. I would argue that I'm not, but because the Chinese Government says I am a terrorist, it must be true.’

A matter of weeks ago Ian harboured this so-called terrorist and Nobel peace prize nominee at Parliament House. Building on human rights momentum generated by Ms Kadeer’s visit, Ian attended Falun Gong’s Chinese cultural extravaganza in Sydney as well as devoting an adjournment speech to the Tibetan issue. http://bulletin/prod/parlment/hansArt.nsf/V3Key/LC20080401043

GAME HUNTING IN BELANGLO STATE FOREST

Ian’s office is currently circulating a petition to stop game hunting in the Belanglo State Forest, an initiative that Minister Macdonald describes as an “obsessive campaign in relation to the Game Council”. For those local groups keen to gather signatures please visit http://www.iancohen.org.au/resource.aspx?id=24 or contact Scott at scott.hickie@parliament.nsw.gov.au This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it

BILL TO BAN DEVELOPER DONATIONS INTRODUCED INTO PARLIAMENT

This week I introduced into the parliament a Bill to that, if passed,  will make it an offence for political parties or candidates to accept donations from property developers.

This Bill will, in one simple step, remove the vast majority of conflicts of interest that have brought the state’s planning system into such disrepute.  It will provide the test of whether the Labor and Liberal parties are serious about cleaning up the political funding system.

The planning system has been corrupted by a climate of rampant conflicts of interest and, at times, outright corruption. ICAC inquiries into the Tweed, Strathfield, Liverpool, Rockdale and Wollongong councils have provided incontrovertible evidence that political donations have affected decisions relating to developments.

The Bill can be found at: http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/prod/parlment/nswbills.nsf/131a07fa4b8a041cca256e610012de17/81a438c86667f747ca2572d6007de3c0!OpenDocument

DEVELOPER DONATED OVER $300,000 TO THE ALP WHILE NEGOTIATING CONTROVERSIAL DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT

I have been pursuing Lands Minister Tony Kelly during question time in parliament this week about his decision to grant a 50 year lease for a private resort development on crown land in the Killalea State Park, south of Sydney.

One of the partners in the controversial development made 18 separate donations totalling over $330,000 to the NSW Labor party during the time it was negotiating a 50-year lease of the park that required the approval of the Minister for Lands, Tony Kelly.
Many of the donations coincided with key government decisions relating to the development in the Park near Shellharbour, south of Sydney.

HOME WARRANTIES INSURANCE BILL

This week I gave notice of a Bill to establish a government statutory insurance scheme for home building. The Greens Bill will be based on the successful Queensland model and will provide greater protection for consumers and more affordable insurance for builders.

CAR LOVERS - A DEPENDENT NATION

John appeared on this week’s SBS TV Insight program, arguing for a public transport solution to the impending peak oil crisis. You can watch it at:

CORPORATE SCARE TACTICS CAN’T RESCUE COSTA’S SELL-OFF PUSH

Statements from the axis of business groups touting NSW Treasurer Michael Costa’s electricity sell-off show an alarming lack of understanding of how the industry works.

O’FARRELL SHOULD DUMP YOUNG LIBERALS EDUCATION WITCH-HUNT

John called for NSW Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell to dissociate himself from the ‘dob in a teacher’ fear campaign being run by the Young Liberals. By wanting to turn students into ideological vigilantes, they are igniting a classroom witch-hunt.

AUDITS NEEDED TO STOP WIDE-SPREAD PRIVATE SCHOOL FRAUD

State and commonwealth education ministers must act on admissions by the principal of Lakeside Christian College that private schools are rorting the funding system. It is little wonder that non-government schools can cheat the system with confidence, given that Lakeside had not been audited in 16 years.

SOARING PRIVATE SCHOOL FEES DEMONSTRATE FAILURE OF PUBLIC FUNDING POLICIES

Massive increases in the fees charged by Illawarra private schools make a mockery of claims that public funding is designed to make these institutions more affordable.

WORK STARTS ON CENTRAL COAST POWER LINE BETRAYING RESIDENTS AND ENVIRONMENT

Construction has begun on Energy Australia’s 132 kV power line between Ourimbah and Terrigal signalling the Iemma government’s intention to ignore residents’ concerns for their health and the environment. John moved a motion in Parliament calling for the Energy Minister to reroute and underground the line.

ORGANIC FOOD LABELLING REGULATION NEEDED TO PROTECT CONSUMERS AND FARMERS

The failure of state and federal governments to introduce uniform regulations for the labelling of organic foods is undermining consumer confidence and punishing farmers who do the right thing. John called on NSW food minister Ian Macdonald to push for a single, unified system of certification.

KERRY NETTLE
www.kerrynettle.org.au

HELPING ASYLUM SEEKERS

Over the years Kerry has become known inside Villawood as a politician who will listen to immigration detainees. With the change of government new opportunities are arising for detainees to be freed. Immigration Minister Evans has said he wants to clear away the 'legacy cases' left to rot in detention by the Howard government and Kerry has been assisting and supporting various individuals who are still in detention. Kerry will visit Villawood again in the near future and prepare to handover the Immigration portfolio to a new Senator in July.

CHANGES TO ELECTION FUNDING

The new government has announced that legislation will be changed so that from July 1 this year federal election funding will be determined on the basis of verified electoral spending not on the number of votes received. This will have significant implications for Greens local groups – stay tuned.

PARLIAMENTARY GROUP ON POPULATION & DEVELOPMENT

With other members of the Parliamentary Group on Population and Development Kerry has been working to ensure that the government overturns the ban on AusAID funding going to projects that provide information and access to abortion and the full range of contraception options. We are still monitoring this process, and Kerry will shortly meet with the Foreign Minister to ensure that the ban will be overturned in the next three months.

With other members of the group Kerry also recently attended a conference on Population, Peak Oil and Climate Change in Canberra and later this month she will represent the group at the Asian Parliamentarians Meeting on Population and Development in Kuala Lumpur.

5. CAMPAIGNS

PUBLIC POWER NOT PRIVATE PROFIT
On 10 December NSW Premier Morris Iemma announced his intention to sell NSW's electricity retailers and to lease the publicly-owned power stations. The Greens are committed to keeping the electricity industry in public hands. Many local groups are already very active and are campaigning hard with public events, stalls, petitions, etc, and the MPs have been travelling across NSW to speak about this issue.

Over the coming weeks pole posters will be put up around Sydney as part of the Greens' campaign. Web resources continue to be added at http://www.johnkaye.org.au/no-sell-off. For copies of leaflets, petitions, posters and other materials, contact John’s office on 02 9230 2668 or email justin.whelan@parliament.nsw.gov.au This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it .

The union movement and progressive groups are also organising to stop the sale, and Premier Iemma and his Treasurer Michael Costa are facing considerable pressure from within their own party to reject the sale.

ACT NOW: With a single mouse click you can send an email to members of the NSW Upper House asking them to oppose Treasurer Michael Costa’s electricity industry privatisation: www.johnkaye.org.au/no-sell-off-MLC-eprotest

OIL PROOF NSW NOW! THE GREENS PEAK OIL CAMPAIGN
In 2002, the price of petrol was 84 cents for a litre. Today the price is 60 percent higher. The era of cheap, plentiful and easily accessible oil is coming to an end and the knock-on effect of peak oil and climate change will transform NSW. The NSW government must act to reduce Sydney's dependence on fossil fuels to preserve dwindling oil stocks for rural communities.

Write to Premier Iemma today and urge him to stop pouring billions of dollars into building more motorways. Instead, he must start investing in more rail, light rail, buses and safe bicycle and pedestrian routes. Write to Premier Iemma at thepremier@www.nsw.gov.au This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it or at Parliament House, Macquarie St, Sydney 2000.
