NSW government figures showed that a group of inner-Sydney public schools were now drawing one in ten students away from private schools. Although the NSW Education Minister praised his Revitalisation of Inner-Sydney schools program, John Kaye pointed out that “the rise in student numbers was paid for by the shameful closure and sale of other schools.

“It would be foolish to read anything into figures that showed a drift to public schools until they are measured against the number of students who graduate from public primary schools and go in the other direction to private high schools.”
